The best metal to invest in 2025 may not be gold or silver, but copper… and I’ll explain why…
Currently, copper is the most preferred metal to make electrical wires, and as battery operated vehicles rise around the world, we need 4X as much copper to manufacture these cars, but supply isn’t growing as much.
As per UNCTAD estimates, the world needs 80 new copper mines worth USD 250 Bn investment in the next 5 years… which is an almost impossible to meet target by 2030
Because to build copper mines takes between 15 to 25 years!
The largest producers of copper in the world are Chile, Australia, Peru, and the ore is finally processed into wires in China, Germany, Japan and the US.
Ask any manufacturer of machinery how fluctuating copper prices are the make or break for their margins and future.
India is the second largest importer of copper in the world and our demand has increased by 70% over the past 7 years despite recycling of existing copper for reuse.
Copper prices have almost doubled in the past 5 years, giving a return of over 14% per annum.
However, when you look at the data since the year 2000, the return is a little over 7% per annum.
The metal price has been extremely volatile in the past, quite like that of silver… and currently rests at Rs 850-900 per kg in India.
A good way to dabble in this can be through copper futures trading on the MCX exchange… but I’m mostly a long term investor who does not engage in short termtrades, so options to invest for the long term at the moment are far and few.
There are international ETFs like Global Copper Miners ETF…
But a better way could be to invest in companies that are in the processing of copper such as Hindalco, Sterlite Copper.
Again, it’s a highly volatile commodity that I personally don’t invest in, but worth studying for its future industrial uses in wires, EVs, tubes and electronics.
