I work in this field its very small because quantitative finance goes beyond traditional finance by fixing the flaws in basic models using advanced math. Firms guard their models because once they’re widely known, they lose their edge, markets adjust, and profits disappear. That's why HFT firms can't scale infinitely and large account investors (such as your 401K) sell slowly to avoid moving the market. If you want to learn more, study retired models from old firms, they share them all the time after shutting down the firm or it longer works, they really only gate keep when its making them money or grab a quant finance textbook.
I know what they use; advanced stochastic calculus, information theory, entropy metrics, game theory, hidden markov models, stochastic volatility models, etc… I know what they do.
Quant here. I encourage everyone to actually read his book. In our field it’s common knowledge that there’s nothing mystical going on, they were running an alpha/edge hunter that’s looking for statistical anomalies with predictive power. It changes constantly, but whatever anomaly shows up (inside or outside of historical data), they’ll use it.
The idea that they had some “secret one size fits all strategy” is pure retail conspiracy thinking.
