Banks will remain open on Saturday, July 19. However, the bank, in Tripura, will be closed due to Ker Puja, a special festival celebrated in the state.
Ker Puja is held to honour Ker, a local guardian deity believed to protect people from disasters and external dangers.
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), there are seven official bank holidays in July. These include both national and state-specific holidays, along with regular weekend closures.
The RBI, along with state governments, creates the holiday list each year by considering festivals, cultural events, and local customs. The list is published on the official RBI website and also shared with banks and financial institutions. The schedule follows the rules under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Here is a quick look at the upcoming bank holidays in the second half of July:
– July 19 (Saturday): Banks will be closed only in Tripura due to Ker Puja.
– July 20 (Sunday): All banks across the country will be shut.
– July 26 (Saturday): It’s the fourth Saturday, so banks will remain closed nationwide.
– July 27 (Sunday): As it’s a Sunday, banks will again be shut across the country.
– July 28 (Monday): In Gangtok, banks will remain closed for Drukpa Tshe-zi, a local festival.
What if you need banking services on a holiday?
Don’t worry! Even on holidays, online and mobile banking services are available. You can still check your balance, transfer money, pay bills, or use UPI and ATM services—unless there is a technical issue or maintenance work going on.
Since bank holidays may vary depending on your state or city, it is always a good idea to check with your local bank branch in advance. This way, you can plan better, especially around weekends or when you expect urgent transactions. Being aware of the bank holiday calendar can help you stay prepared and avoid any last-minute issues with your financial tasks.
What is Ker Puja?
Ker Puja is a sacred festival celebrated in Tripura by the Tripuri and Halam tribes. It honours Ker, the guardian deity believed to protect the land and its people. Held 14 days after Kharchi Puja, the festival includes rituals meant to ward off evil and ensure peace in the community.
